Jacqueline Cochran Stamp 1996

On November 6, 1994, the Thermal Regional Airport was renamed in a ceremony to the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport, and the Jacqueline Cochran airshow was held at the airport on the same day (as reported in The Desert Sun newspaper of Palm Springs on that day).

On March 9, 1996, several dignitaries assembled at that airport for the issue of the 50 cent Jacqueline Cochran stamp (for use on post cards sent internationally). The cancellation on the stamps for this first day of issue were from Indio, California, some six miles away. Jacqueline Cochran and her husband, Floyd Odlum, had a house in Indio prior to her death in 1980.

A First Day of Issue ceremony for a new postage stamp usually takes place in a location of special relevance to the subject of the stamp. Attendees of the ceremony can purchase a one-page, double-side and folded program of the event, which has the cancelled stamp on it, or an 8 X 11 sheet with information and a stamp on it, and there will be first day cover creators there as well to have their FDCs cancelled.
